Located on the barrier island, this community is surrounded by water on all sides, - the Intracoastal Waterway, Port Everglades and the Atlantic Ocean and it contains, the Barbara River, Grace River, Marion River and Marietta River among its isles. The short walk to the beach gives us the best of all worlds. It is a group of 252 single family homes bordered by co-ops, condominiums and a few apartment complexes and has a strong and vibrant sense of community.
The Harbour Inlet Association was form in December 1960 and has remained an active and hardworking volunteer association. Over the last two years and in conjunction with the City of Fort Lauderdale, this association has managed a $600,000.00 project of improvements which addressed safety, speed, and beautification. Added to the neighborhood were winding sidewalks, decorative street lights and street poles, roundabouts to slow traffic, enhanced landscaping at various corners on the arterial way and bridge columns announcing who we are. A Gatehouse was constructed at our entryway which will be used by the Police Department as a substation. Hundreds of new trees and palms were added throughout the neighborhood, increasing our arbor coverage and maintaining the tropical feel of where we live.
Other projects that are on-going and representative of a strong neighborhood is very active participation on the Fort Lauderdale Council of Civic Associations, numerous task force as assigned by the City Commission, and continued improvements to the area. For our neighborhood area, we have many committees that work throughout the neighborhood to accomplish many tasks such as the children's committee which hosts an annual Easter Egg Hunt, annual 4th of July Parade and picnic, and local sports at St. Sebastian Church for children under the age of 8. Code Enforcement committee accepts complaints from its neighbors and attempts to reconcile the problem before turning them over to the City for action. A group known as "Helping Hands" has been very busy over the last few years filling in for neighbors when a little help is needed like a ride to the airport, trash cans moved, computer repair, house watching, mail handling and more. "Home of the Month" has been presented to numerous homes over the past 4 years and it's amazing at the upgrading that is on-going in our neighborhood.
Through an affiliation with Stephen Kelley, we are now providing a Newsletter in conjunction with Harbour Inlet and Harbor Beach which is all-inclusive of our area. It has received a tremendous response and following and continues to get better as time goes on. Input is always welcomed and appreciated from our residents.
The Board of Directors continues to work toward providing the improvements requested by the membership through Matching Grants and other fund-raisers to off-set the costs. Currently Harbour Inlet is in consideration for a National Neighborhood Award as well as one from the City of Fort Lauderdale. Being nominated is an honor itself.
Take the time to ride through this lovely old neighborhood. Most of these homes were built in the 50s and are all different. This is a strong family neighborhood with lots of young children who mingle nicely with the single members and older members to make for a true neighborhood. We are lucky to live here. |
